JP Cormier and the Prismatic Festival

Renowned Nova Scotian folk singer JP Cormier will be performing several times as part of this years Prismatic Festival at Alderney Landing. More information can be found here. More information on JP can be found on his website.

Open House: The Uniacke Estate

On September 7th from 11:30-4:00 the Uniacke Estate in Mt. Uniacke will be hosting an open house in honor of its 199th anniversary. All are welcome and admission is free.

Information Session: The Sinking of the SS Atlantic

Author Bob Chaulk will be on location at the SS Atlantic Interpretation Center in Terence Bay on Thursday, August 7th to host an information session on the 1873 sinking of the center's namesake. The session will run from 7pm until 8pm. More information may be found here.

Halifax Citadel Ghost Tours

Public ghost tours of the Halifax Citadel will run until October 31st. These are guided candelight tours of the ramparts and dark passages of the fortress to learn about the various ghosts that are rumored to haunt it. The tours will run each Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 10pm. Admission costs and more information can be found here.

David Stone in Concert

David Stone will be performing at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic as part of Tuesday Night Tunes. David is a singer songwriter based out of Halifax who spent four summers as a heritage interpreter at the museum. His albums include Songs of the Minas Ring, History, and At Home. Roger Stone will join him to sing from Down Through Halifax.

The concert will begin at 7pm in the museum courtyard.

Prize And Predjudice

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is opening a new exhibit on the War of 1812 as part of the ongoing 200th anniversary of the war. The exhibit was put together by the Canadian War Museum and is side by side with a companion exhibit by the museum itself.

The exhibit examines the four sides of the war: the Americans, the Canadians, the British and the First Nations.

Since 1814 was the year that around 2000 Black refugees began to arrive in Nova Scotia from Cheasapeeke Bay, two letters from some these refugees are on display for the first time.

The exhibit runs until October.

Atlantic Canada Conference: The War of 1812 in Atlantic Canada

From August 21-24 Saint Mary's University will be hosting the Atlantic Canada Conference, which will focus on the war of 1812 in the area. The event will consist of several days of informative lectures, an exhibit at the Maritime Museum and tour. The event costs $15 per person, though students attend for free. Registration is limited, and registration form can be found here.

A Glimpse Inside the Government House

All summer, until August 31st the Government House will be open to tour, for free. Hours are 11am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on weekends.

The Government House has been the residence of the lieutenant governor since Gov. Wentworth had it constructed in 1807. It is the oldest official residence in Canada and probably our best and most extravagant example of Georgian architecture.

The Government House is located at 1451 Barrington St, across from the Old Burying Ground.

Ghosts and Maritime Folklore

On July 15th at 7pm Andrew Aulenback, a heritage interpreter, library and folklorist will be giving a tour of the Maritime Museum's darkest corners and telling local ghost stories. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about supernatural folklore, which has been a significant part of Maritime culture for centuries. More information can be found here.

Around the Block in 265 Years

As part of Open Doors Halifax, Joanne McCarthy O'Leary will be hosting a walking tour of the city block surrounding the new public library. The walk will last for around 90 minutes and will be filled with interesting tales from the last 265 years of the areas history.

The tour will run at 10am on the 7th and 1pm on the 8th.

World War II D-Day Commemorative Display

June 6th of this year marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day. In honour of this, the Halifax Citadel in association with the World War II Living History Association will be hosting a display from June 7th-8th. This display will commemorate the Citadel's role in the war, as well as Canada's contributions to the D-Day struggle. The displays will feature antique vehicles, uniforms, weapons and a firing demonstration of replica machine guns.

Open Doors Halifax

Open Doors Halifax 2014 will take place on the weekend of June 7th - 8th. The event will be running for its second year and as before will offer a glimpse at the interior several significant historical landmarks in the city and a whole array of other structures. Of interest to history buffs this years tour will feature the Old Town Clock, Sacred Heart School, the Africville Museum, Alexander Keith's Brewery, Government House, Province House and the Halifax Club among many more.
