Details and Human Drama: Picturing the Wreck of the SS Atlantic
The 141st anniversary of the sinking of the SS Atlantic off of Prospect Bay will occur on April 1st. The tragedy was a media sensation which found its way not only into newspapers but also into poems, a book, illustrations and weekly magazines. The coverage of the event illustrates the Victorian fascination with death and the ways in which savvy members of the publishing field used this to make money. On the 1st, Kathleen Adams will be at the Maritime Museum to give a lecture and examine these pictorial and written representations of the tragedy. The lecture will be free and will take place from 7:30-8:30pm.
